AUSTRALIA penguin island

We took a short ferry from Rockingham across the Shoalwater Bay over to Penguin Island. There is a small discovery center there that is home to a handful of fairy penguins.

More penguins live on the island but spend the day fishing and come back to the island only at nightfall.

We decided to stay for the day. We brought a picnic and spent the afternoon exploring the sea caves and playing on the beach.

We had to remind ourselves that it was December.
Merry Christmas from Australia!!!

While we were eating our lunch we noticed a penguin in the cave right behind us! One of the wildlife rangers mentioned that it was the very end of molting season, so a few penguins stay behind from hunting until their coats are complete.

As we were leaving we noticed one more penguin in the cave!
