32 oz Busch's baked beans (1 big can and 1 little can)
1 can black beans
1/2 onion diced
1 lb ground beef (cooked)
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can rotel chiles
2 packs Mild McCormick's chili sauce
1 cup brown sugar
Throw everything in the crock pot, mix together, cook 2-3 hours on low or until warmed up.
Straight from my sister's cook book, this recipe has won first place in two Chili Cook-offs. The brown sugar is definitely the secret weapon. So, this weekend we mixed it up and packed it up to try for another ribbon.
The Cook-off was just as fun as every year. A great park up in the woods. Trails for exploring, a lake for throwing sticks, a playground for getting good and dirty and a nice field on the other side of the toboggan run for some football playing.
It's time to start thinking about getting the kids packed up when a friend comes up and says, "Uh, just thought I'd let you know Dave got hit in the face playing football"
"Is he alright?"
"Ya, he's headed back."
"Ok, thanks" (but really thinking - he's a big boy, why is he telling me this?)
Then another friend
"Hey Jess, Dave collided with John and has a pretty big cut on his face"
"Oh really, is he alright?"
"Ya, but its kinda funny how he's acting right now. He's alert and oriented but pretty forgetful. I think he has a mild concussion, and his cut is going to need stitches."
Oh. Well. In that case, let's get a move on. Ice Dave. Get kids. Get stuff. Move car seats. Call insurance. Head to hospital for long night in the ER. Change of plans. Move one car seat back. Head home. Bathe baby. Baby to bed. Ice Dave. Get Noah. Move car seat back. Bathe boy. Boy to bed. Home visit from one nurse anestethist, one physician's assistant, and one radiologist. Surgery on kitchen table. THANK YOU! Eat ice cream. IBprofen Dave. Dave to bed.
Oh and our chili?
...it only got 2nd place.

Somehow I didn't see Dave on Sunday, but Brandon told me he had stitches from the football game. Yikes! Yet your rendition is so calm.
Who's the nurse anesthetist in the ward?
Oh, and I would have voted for your chili, but I wasn't a judge. :)
You have the toughest looking husband; man, lucky...
That is quite the memory to take away from the football game! Hope you are feeling better, Dave, and we can't wait to try a new chili recipe Jessie - today is a nice chilly, wet day so we may just have it tonight!
Ow, Dave! And Jessie - I really love reading your blog. Your writing is really beautiful. Love to all of you.
That looks awful..poor Dave. The chili recipe looks great, I will have to try it out!
Hope Dave is healing well. Yeah! We finally get the award winning chili recipe. Thanks for sharing.

love you, lin
Hey, so I made the chili recipe and it was REALLY good, except we couldn't find Rotel chiles anywhere. So we made it without that and it was still good. Where did you get them?
poor dave! By the way, I think Dave is graduating soon, so I just want to put my plug in for New Mexico. There is a college here. And it is a great place. :)
Did you still make the catch Dave? I will see if I can hook you up with a plastic face mask for church ball.
Ted
Wow, what a night for you! I'm glad it wasn't worse, but that's still no good. The chili does look great, and I'm always looking for an award-winner, even 2nd place is great!
Ouch Dave! That looks like it hurt. You do look tough, though. I'm sure you made the play and have a great story to boot. The recipe looks great! Thanks for sharing. We love and miss you guys!
Nice cut Dave!
tried your chili last week and LOVED it!!! i didn't enter it in any contests, but i can see why it wins. at one williamston ward linger-longer years ago, i had some chili that tasted just like this one. i walked around the whole gym asking everyone who made it. i never found out. and now i have the recipe! thanks. hope you guys are doing well.
