MUMBAI Ghandi House

We went to visit Mani Bhavan, the house Mahatma Gandi lived in from 1917 to 1934 while fighting for India's independence.

Tiny but poignant.

The museum led you through his story with memorabilia, letters, films, photos, documents and colorful dioramas. His nonviolent protests, his philosophies, his civil disobedience campaigns, his fasting.

"Let us forget 'I am a Hindu, you are a Muslim' or 'I am a Guujarati, you are a Madrasi' let us sink 'I' and 'mine' in a common Indian nationality. We are all one."

Dave and I had just finished reading "Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and his struggle with India." We passed the book back and forth chasing each other's bookmarks. It was nice to have context and insight into this remarkable man.

"I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any."

Ghandi's minimalist room with his few possessions. Also includes his famous spinning wheel that was a symbol of his movement to help India be more self reliant.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world"

As we were leaving a big school group came in. I tried to snap a picture of them filling the room and reading the exhibits but instead they all wanted to hop in and pose! Too funny!
