PHNOM PENH: back to Cambodia

I headed to Cambodia over the weekend with some great friends.

And made some new ones, who all happened to be the mothers of only boys.

We were all there to race in the Kep Trio for Bridges Across Borders, a charity race for the Chamcar Bei village in Kep, Cambodia.

Dave stayed with the boys back in Singapore. They had big plans for 'Daddy's Weekend' like breakfast at McDonalds and slurpee runs.

We flew into the captial city, Phnom Penh. From the airport we drove 3 hours or so down a 'new' road past the skinny cows and the brown fields at dry season.

To tell you the truth, I was bugged about my fold out aisle seat in a full van on a bumpy road. That is, until I saw 9 people sitting on top of a big bus because the inside was overflowing with elbows and knees. Then I remembered Cambodia and why we were there.

We drove past kids wearing school uniforms walking to school. Past small shacks, markets, temples, fruit stands, loaded motorcycles and of course the roadside petrol stands.

We stayed in bungalows near the coast. We woke up to roosters crowing, "was that a cow?!" while taking a shower,

and enjoyed every minute of it.

After the race we had dinner at the sailing club

and watched these awesome little breakdancers from Phnom Penh. TinyToones takes in street kids, gives them a home, food, teaches literacy, drug prevention, English, and I'm so glad breakdancing as well.

I can believe you all only have boys! I often wonder too why I was born with such an easy life and think what am I doing to make life better for others. nothing. It is always nice to get a reminder that our hardships though harder than some aren't as hard as others. I've had several experiences while on crowded buses here that remind me it's not all that bad. Great posts! Hope you are still up for Bangkok some time :)
